Growing up, my sisters and I were always thinking of crafty things to make. While summering on a small island off the coast of Maine, we earned spending money making and selling everything from god's eyes to bread.
Years later (after moving to Maine permanently) it seemed natural to collaborate with my sister, Caitlin Hunter, owner of Appleton Creamery and goat cheese maker extraordinaire, in making goat milk soap. We had both always wanted to try, but were a little nervous about the process. When a local soap maker decided to sell her equipment, we recognized the opportunity. We were especially thrilled when she offered to show us how it was done!
Our soap line now boasts over 30 varieties, with new ones being added according to whim and demand. With the addition of herbs, flowers, spices, seeds, and even chocolate, "flavors" seems a better description than "scents". Fragrance oils and essential oils are added to the basic recipe of olive oil, coconut oil and palm oil for a bar which lathers nicely and smells heavenly. Of course the goat's milk adds the proteins and extra fats which make each bar super moisturizing. Unlike commercial soaps, the natural glycerin remains in each bar. Almond oil, rosemary oleoresin (preservative), and honey are a few of the "extras" that make for a soap which you will crave just as you crave the cheeses that Caitlin makes...
Many customers assume that the name "Sisters Soap" refers to my own two daughters, Morgan and Meara, who help out selling the soap at local farmers' markets and craft fairs, though not in the making of it (yet...). It is fitting, as perhaps they will carry on where I leave off!
Caitlin now concentrates on the cheeses, as that demands all of her time, and I make the soaps, but the soaps will always be
Sisters' Soap!
Enjoy!
